Learn to choose products that will benefit your specific skin characteristics and problems.

Being aware of your specific skin characteristics is the next step in selecting anti-aging skin care products that will work for you. Your skins characteristics depend upon your own distinctive genetic profile and the daily environmental factors you face.

Skin characteristics can be:

Normal - neither to dry or to oily

Oily - skin produces sebum all the time

Dry - skin can be dry from lack of sebum production or environmental factors

Combination - parts of skin can be dry, parts normal, parts oily

Sensitive Skin

People of all skin colors can have sensitive skin. However people with lighter complexions, although not always, commonly are more sensitive skin.

Let's see if you have sensitive or hardy skin. This will make a big difference in the product strengths you will choose.

Ask yourself these questions?

  • Do sunscreens irritate my skin?
  • Do skin care products irritate my skin or cause me to breakout?
  • Have you ever had rosacea?
  • Does costume jewelry bother my skin?
  • Do you get rashes?
  • Do fragranced lotions, bath or laundry products annoy my skin?
  • Do you often get red or flushed?
  • Do make-ups irritate my skin?
  • Do you looked red in photos?
  • Do you get red bumps on your face?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, then you have very sensitive skin.

If you answered yes to around 1/2 of these questions, then you have, to some extent, sensitive skin.

If you answered yes to none or one to these questions, then you have a more hardy, resistant skin.

Keep track of your results as you will use them when selecting the correct skin care products.

Here are some other things to look at to establish your skin characteristics. Just remember - no skin characteristic is bad, we are all unique!

Special Skin Characteristic Concerns

Skin Pigmentation

You should consider the amount of pigment your skin has when choosing products.

Darker pigmented skin tones need to be careful with any skin lightening products and exfoliation methods.
When darker pigmented skin is irritated, it can react by making more pigment leaving dark blotches. Not what you want!

Freckles are not the same as brown spots from age or the sun. Lighter skinned people with lots of freckles should not try to erase freckles with over the counter bleaching products or acids. You should consult a dermatologist for your specific options.

Other factors that may affect your skin's state:

  • Hormonal changes (Pregnancy, Menopause, Thyroid)
  • Internal Stress (Worry and Anxiety)
  • Environmental Stress (Urban living in a high air pollution area)

Your skin can react to all of these conditions in negative ways.
If you have a rather sudden change in your skin, you should consider if hormones or stress could be the problem.

Depending on what the hormonal change in your skin is, some products may help with the symptoms.
The underlying cause of course will remain until something changes internally.
Skin care products will not help internal stress reactive skin conditions,
but can help negative conditions brought on by environmental stress.

Your Specific Skin Problems

Next - let's identify your specific skin problems and concerns.
In other words, what do you want to improve about your skin?
What concerns you?

  • I want to reduce fine lines.
  • I want to reduce wrinkles.
  • I want to get rid of brown spots.
  • I want smoother, younger looking skin.
  • I want to keep my skin healthy.
  • I want stop breaking out.
  • I want my skin to glow.
  • I want better looking pores.
  • I want my dry skin to feel comfortable.
  • I want my oily skin to not to look so shiny.
