Don't overscrub you face with harsh, drying soaps just to slather on moisturizer after you have striped away your natural oil. Instead, Use a mild soap or liquid cleanser without extra fats like coco butter, olive oil or lanolin. Also avoid drying astringents if you don't breakout.

Next you will have to decide if you need a moisturizer. If you skin is very oily and you are not overly drying it when washing, then you may not need a moisturizer. Your own oil will serve as a built in barrier to dryness. If you only have mildly oily skin, then choose an oil-in-water emulsion moisturizer. (Oil-in-water means that there is more water than oil. Look for water to be ahead of any oil in the ingredient list.) You may also try an oil-free moisturizer. The choice will be yours, but try to wash your face gently for a week or so and then choose the moisturizer based on how your skin is then.
